an elegy for the fallen

we are dying in droves
strangled and beaten
bodies filled with bullets
lying in shallow graves
life-fires extinguished
and dreams crumbled

fallen gender warriors,
this is for you
an elegy recalling how
you were in life -
beautiful young women
handsome cocky boys

we remember you
as you'd wish it
living the lives you did
with pride and joy
you are our sisters and brothers
dying because you were not
understood
lives cut short by hate and fear
your deaths forgotten as
the media concentrates
on "boys" in dresses
and "girls" in BVD's

but we remember
we see ourselves in you
and we shall never forget
how your futures
were destroyed

they have killed you
murdered in cold blood
and maybe they will
dump our corpses in the woods too

but this community
that maybe you never
found alive
will remember and love
you in death
as you would want
to be recalled
standing proud
living fiercely
alive with energy
filled with joy
and hope.
