Notes: This was originally a series of poems that built one off the other, written during my slam poetry class. I’ve fiddled and hopefully y’all will like my heretical view of Eden.
First Sex: A Heretic’s View of Eden
by Alex Kimball
I.
who came first adam or eve
adam and steve
amy and eve
a rib bone, a woman
lilith cast off from eden
and this is doctor fraiser crane
saying good night and good mental health
mental hell!
agony and pain
cast off from the garden
adam and eve
adam and steve
amy and eve
saving the best for last
who wants to get nekkid
show those baptists what
it’s really all about
tenderness and love
i’d like to think that
first sex
who came first, adam or eve
in their prehistoric fornication
hot and sweaty below
the tree of knowledge
of good and evil
II.
lilith on the edge looking in
sees adam and eve
making it below the tree
shaking things up
one of them cries out
an apple falls to the ground
lilith on the edge looking in
a snake slithers up for a chat
she turns to this reptile
says, "once i was loved
and now i’m not. i have the
knowledge He wants to keep
from them. the knowledge of
good and evil."
lilith on the edge looking in
talks to a snake all day
says, "once she loved me
and then that stupid creator
realized he’d forgotten the
interlocking parts. perfection -
drizzled away for that guy."
III.
eve stuck beneath the sweaty guy
looks up to the tree above them
sees the round apple about to fall
newton’s laws of gravity undiscovered
eve stuck beneath this sweaty guy
sees the apple and thinks of her first wife
looks beyond the tree, the garden
to the edge of her world
whispers, "perfection drizzled away"
IV.
and from on high he sees his work
his toys with interlocking parts at play
sees the castoff original model at the edge
watching, like him, the perfection
that has been drizzled away
and from on high he sees his work
watches the snake chat up his favorite child
and he knows
he KNOWS
his perfect vision is about to crumble
sees the apple fall
and with it comes a new age
V.
that first - very first - creation
life’s breath into woman and wife
lilith and eve
a pre-genesis romeo and juliet
before sin
before guilt
before an apple caused downfall
there was lilith and eve
in the garden of eden
and now lilith looks in
forever outside.
